What is being saved

Being saved starts out with you realizing that you are not the most important person in the universe, and understanding that God is. Sometimes we have to get to rock bottom before we realize this, and begin to feel the need for God in our lives. If you haven't already done so, I urge you to seek God before you hit rock bottom because it will save you a whole lot of suffering. Suffering? ...Ya, Suffering! You see, without God, ...it's like going from Pennsylvania to California without a road map and having no one to ask for directions. You are definately going to get lost without a map on this trip, but more importantly, ...where will you end up? Will you end up in the bad part of town?, ..or will you just keep wondering about until your run out of food and money? Either way, you're in for a ruff ride, and there is nothing worse than being lost and not knowing which way to go with no one to help. -->Now having a relationship with God is like having a road map for life. You will know exactly where your going, and you wont run out of supplies before you get there. Ya, ...you may have a flat tire along the way, but you're gonna get there.
So, ...I hope you see the need for God in your life, ...but now you're asking what do I have to give up for this salvation thing? Well everyone will tell you that salvation is a free gift from God, and it is.... But just so we cover all the bases, let's put it like this; Having a relationship with God is just like finding that special person that you want to spend the rest of your life with. To put it bluntly, you have to stop sleeping around! ...Meaning that you have to give up being selfish. "Don't look at me like that! ...I'm not calling you names." ...Everyone has the same problem, that's just our nature I guess. We are all just a little bit selfish. So, there you have it, ...You have to do your best not to be selfish. Will you make mistakes?, ...everyday!, ...probably even more than one. But that's what God's grace is for. He loves you so much, He looks past all your faults. God doesn't expect you to be perfect! If you were, you wouldn't need God. God just loves perfect effort. Perfect effort is in fact; -failing but always trying, and never giving up on the relationship.
Now that we've got that established, ...Once you decide you want to start a relationship with God how will you begin it? ...Well I'm glad you asked. First you need to ask for forgiveness for all your sins. That means past, present, and future sins. This is called repentance.
...Then after you ask for forgiveness, you need to ask Christ to come live in your heart. Live in your heart! You mean Jesus can fit in my heart? Wow, that's weird! No, not really. ...You might look at it like this; It's like having this person who is an awesome role model that you love and adore, but they aren't physically here. So you have to think, ...what would they do in this situation? And for that moment, ...just thinking of their warm smile and the loving way that they would handle things just makes you feel their presence. ...That's kinda what the holy spirit is. ...But for you to really understand, you have to feel it, so you're just going to have to trust me.
So if you're ready for a relationship with God you might say a prayer something like this, but in your own words:
Dear God, Please forgive me, ...I'm a sinner. I'm so sorry for not acknoledging you. I've realized what's missing in my life, I need you, I've just been to stubborn to admit it. Thank you for your son Jesus who died on a cross for my past, present, and future sins. Please come live in my heart, and be a part of my life. ...Amen.
